La Catedral Café

You can sample 12 different types of “wrong” chilaquiles, eat gorgeous pancakes with iced chips and savor authentic Mexican coffee with cinnamon while gazing at gorgeous religious artifacts.

No wonder customers from all over Chicago sometimes wait two hours to enjoy the heavenly experience at La Catedral & Cafe. Chef and owner Ambrocio Gonzalez created an unforgettable experience, serving not only mouthwatering Mexican and American breakfasts, but an ambiance full of faith, camaraderie, love for his clients and Mexican culture. When asked why the wait staff wears angel wings shirts, he didn’t hesitate to call them angels and give them credit for much of La Catedral’s success.

“They’re the ones who make everything happen here,” Gonzalez said.

Chef Gonzalez was raised in Mexico, to a single mother. Once in his life, he was selling food as a street vendor. When he first came to the La Catedral location in Little Village, Chicago, things weren’t going so well. He expanded the menu a bit, prayed a lot and after bonding with his neighbours, things took off.

“Our customers from day one are the ones who come to wait, no matter how long it takes,” Gonzalez said.

Reviewers described La Catedral as “the best Mexican breakfast in Chicago & Brunch “in” one of the most unique locations in the Little Village. “Everything about the restaurant is special. While most Mexican restaurants serve one or two types of chilaquiles, Chef Ambrocio offers customers 12 different options – poblano to pico de gallo – to name a few, he adds a brand new chilaquiles every December to usher in the year.” the new.

“You can come here for two weeks and get a different shellac every day,” Gonzalez said.

They also serve up delicious Mexican egg dishes, such as Huevos con Chorizo and Huevos con Salchicha, and their French toast and crepes topped with whipped cream and strawberries are to die for and go to heaven for! La Catedral Café also boasts a variety of drinks. Chef Ambrosio prides himself on taking no shortcuts and making his Mexican coffee with cinnamon just like they do in Mexico. Other memorable beverage selections include Mexican coffee served with caramel water or rice along with a wide selection of refreshing fresh fruit drinks.

Chef Ambrosio’s entire restaurant, floor to ceiling, is filled with Catholic paintings, crosses, and statues of Our Lady of Guadalupe and saints. Clients leave financial offerings next to the statue of St. Anthony, praying that his prayers to find love will be answered. Next, Ambrocio collects shows and donates the money to charitable efforts or people in the community who need help.

“We have a few ladies who come here to pray and they don’t even eat anything,” Gonzalez said. “I think that’s one of the many reasons we’ve been successful.”

And of course with the religious theme come proper menu names like “heavenly desserts,” “acknowledgment-worthy bites,” and “less sinful bites,” such as chicken Caesar and strawberry salads. Reflecting on the success of La Catedral Café, Ambrosio said, “People say I’m lucky, but I say I’m lucky.”

As he pointed to the religious presence around him, he smiled and said, “I have a lot of help.”
