Mary Sommer, self-taught cook and food designer behind @BigGirlBakery, who’s been making this recipe since high school, told “Good Morning America” ‚Äč‚Äčthat “it’s so worth it.”

“As long as I can remember, I’ve been baking and looking for easy and delicious recipes to make something for my teachers for Christmas,” she recalls. “I did [this] and it was a HUGE success. I also made it for my family for Christmas and I still have loved ones begging me to do it every year. It’s really, really good.”

She hailed the “easy and inexpensive” recipe as “one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. It’s crunchy, salty, sweet and incredibly addictive. Do it with caution.”

Additionally, Sommer said that “most people already have the ingredients lying around – salts, butter, brown sugar, chocolate chips and whatever you want. It’s very customizable and I’ll differentiate it for different holidays.”

Recipe for “Christmas Crack”

1 pocket of crackers

1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)

12-ounce package of chocolate chips (dark, semi-sweet, or milk chocolate)

Optional toppings: Sea salt, nuts, M&M’s, nuggets

Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and assemble the saltine crackers in a single layer.

In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Bring to the boil then stir until the mixture is smooth and the sugar has melted. Continue to boil undisturbed for 5 minutes.

Remove the caramel from the heat and pour over the crackers. Spread with a rubber spatula to evenly cover.

Bake for 5 to 6 minutes or until the caramel is bubbly.

Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with chocolate chips. Return to the oven for 2 minutes until the chocolate chips begin to shimmer and melt. Remove from the oven and spread the melted chocolate using an icing spatula. Add favorite toppings.

Transfer the mold to the freezer until firm, about 20 to 30 minutes. Break into large pieces and store in an airtight container.
