LA Clippers basketball returns to free-to-air TV on KTLA 5

KTLA 5 becomes the “Official Television Broadcasting House” for the L.A. Clippers; 15 games will be broadcasted exclusively

The Los Angeles Clippers are back on the TV airwaves.

KTLA 5 and the LA Clippers on Tuesday announced a radio-television partnership that will bring the Clippers’ live matches back to over-the-air television in Southern California for the 2022-2023 season.

The two organizations said in a press release that KTLA 5 will broadcast four pre-season and 11 regular season games, producing pre-match, halftime and post-match coverage.

KTLA 5 previously broadcast the Clippers games live from 1985 to 1991 and from 2002 to 2009.

“The critical way fans interact with the Clippers is by watching the games on TV, and there is no better broadcast partner than KTLA, the number one TV station in Los Angeles,” said Gillian Zucker, Clippers’ president of commercial operations. Segmentation of the TV market has become difficult for consumers. We think it’s extremely important for Clippers basketball to be accessible to as many people as possible, and the NBA’s return to KTLA is a crucial step.”

The Clippers play an Israeli team, Maccabi Raanana, in their first pre-season match broadcast on September 30. Other pre-season games include the Portland Trail Blazers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Denver Nuggets.

Highlights from the regular season broadcast schedule include the Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Other elements of the broadcast partnership include Clippers’ special programming on KTLA 5 and KTLA+, game-day weather forecasts, and recurring features during local news and non-news programming.

“Starting with the opening of Clippers bootcamp, KTLA 5 very special in Los Angeles will be there every exciting step of the way,” said Janine Davis, KTLA Vice President and General Manager. “Clippers fans across Southern California can count on KTLA for exciting pre- and post-game performances, insightful analysis, up-to-date Clippers news, special features on players and coaches, and unique, relevant programming throughout the 2022-2023 basketball season.”

The Clippers, owned by former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, have played nine playoffs over the past 11 seasons. They have 11 consecutive winning seasons – the longest active streak in the NBA.

KTLA 5’s Clippers will also be broadcast by KSWB-TV in San Diego, KGET-TV in Bakersfield and KSEE-TV in Fresno, all of which are owned by Nexstar Media Group, Inc.
