Brewers vs Reds – Game Recap – September 22, 2022

CINCINNATI — Kolten Wong hit a career high of three House Runners and drove in five runs, helping Brandon Woodruff and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 Thursday night.

Wong hit a two-stroke campaign in the second half against Hunter Greene. He hit another two-round shot in the sixth from Dauri Moreta and a solo dash in the eighth against Joel Kuhnel.

Wong owns 15 homes per season.

“I’m definitely not a guy who hits threes home a lot,” Wong said. “I had the opportunity to do this a few times, but I tried to do too much. I just tried not to do too much and keep my swing tight.”

Milwaukee finished with only four hits, but each of Wong’s first two hurdles occurred after a lead walk.

“We’ve had four injuries,” said manager Craig Konsell. “Colton had three, and all three were home runners. That was unbelievable. It was definitely a one-on-one attack.”

The second-placed Brewers (80-70) opened a four-game set against lowly Cincinnati with their second straight win. They stayed two and a half games back from Philadelphia for their third NL wild card.

Woodruff (12-4) hit 11 in six runs. He allowed three hits and walked twice.

The 6-foot-4 right-hander has had 32 hits in his last three starts – all wins. He has hit 11 or more players in three of his four games against the Reds this season.

“I think it starts with rhythm and timing – simple things,” Woodruff said.

Counsell sees his right hand getting close to shape after missing most of June with injuries to his right ankle and fingers.

“He’s getting better. When he came back from injury, he was good, but now he’s better at our time,” Koncell said.

Kyle Farmer hit his thirteenth home in sixth for Cincinnati’s only race. Green (4-13) hit eight in five runs.

The NL Central game drew a crowd of 9,889, the sixth under 10,000 this season at Great American Ball Park.

After throwing 47 shots at least 100 mph in a 1-0 loss in St. Louis on Saturday, Green made three 15 times against Milwaukee, according to Statcast.

“I felt really good,” Green said. It kind of leaked over the board a little bit.”

Wong is the third baseman in Milwaukee to hit three hurdles in one game. Dale Sveum did so on July 17, 1987, against the Angels, and Aaron Hill completed the finish on May 7, 2016, in Cincinnati.
