The holidays are a time of family traditions, activities with loved ones and deliciously festive food. Some people have their recipes that never change, the timeless classics that span the decades and are passed down from generation to generation. However, others like to find new holiday recipes to try every year. And one of the most trusted and well-known resources for finding new (or old) holiday darling recipes is Betty Crocker.
Betty Crocker (who, unfortunately, is a fictional character created by advertisers), has been providing recipes for nearly a century and has become one of America’s most beloved and trusted resources for all things baking and cooking. According his websiteBetty Crocker started in 1921 answering people’s questions about cooking, and since then she’s made a name for herself on TV, radio, in print cookbooks, and on her thriving website, which is said to have received around 12 million visitors per month.
Betty Crocker’s Cookbook became a bestseller in 1950. Since then, over 63 million Betty Crocker cookbooks have been sold worldwide. I will never forget that I was offered my first Betty Crocker cookbook as a leaving gift for college. I was sifting through the pages to find something that looked simple enough for my abilities, and I vividly remember coming across the recipe for “Fluffy Meatloaf” – which I ended up completely botching. However, the memory of me trying my first meal on my own will stay with me forever.
With so many people turning to Betty Crocker as a source of recipes, it’s no surprise that every year the brand releases its list of “Betty Crocker’s Most Searched Holiday Recipes by State.”
“@bettycrocker has revealed the most searched recipes on BettyCrocker.com this holiday season,” General Mills shared via its Instagram account to announce the start of this year’s list.
After recently revealing the results of its 2022 list, each state’s picks are already having everyone talking about whether we would cook our state’s chosen dishes. As soon as I glanced at the list, my eyes went straight to my home state of Florida, to my family’s home states of Mississippi and Louisiana, and to my Current state of residence, New York.
According to the listing, Betty Crocker fans in Florida were looking for Cobia lemon sauce with capers. Meanwhile, those in Mississippi reportedly sought Lemon meringue pie. In Louisiana, people would have liked Bread pudding with bourbon sauce. Finally, those in New York were looking Ice Cream Cone Cakes.
I have to admit the Florida girl in me has never heard of cobia– not to mention having tried it myself. However, after speaking with my aunt Trisha, who is originally from Mississippi but spent decades in Florida, I was reassured that this is definitely a popular dish for those in the southern United States.
“The cobia is also what we knew on the Mississippi coast as the ‘lemon fish,'” she says. “Jim [her husband and my uncle] and his buddies liked to fish them around the oil rigs. They would fillet the catch, brush it with butter and grill it. »
And according to my aunt, some Floridians are very passionate about their favorite types of fish. “We also have dear friends who named their youngest son ‘Cobia’, calling him ‘Coby’ – and he named his first child, a son, ‘Carp!'”
Although I grew up around Mississippi and Louisiana natives, I had never heard of lemon pie or tried bourbon sauce on my bread pudding. So, I immediately called my parents to find out more.
When I asked them about the lemon ice cream pie, they were quick to express their enthusiasm.
“Oh yeah!” said my father. “These are great. We used to buy them all the time and keep them in the fridge. It’s kind of like key lime pie.”
And when I asked about bread pudding with bourbon sauce, my mom agreed, “Yes. That’s absolutely the best way to eat it!”
As for ice cream cone cakes being the most sought after item in New York, I’m a little surprised. I’ve never tasted it and I haven’t seen anyone eat it. But my curiosity is strong enough to try this recipe.
What about your states? Do these recipes surprise you or are they part of your family’s favorite traditions? Either way, Betty Crocker’s holiday recipes by state may give us plenty of new ideas to try this holiday season.
